Preop Instructions
- If you are a smoker, you should stop smoking five (5) days
before your surgery. If you follow this guideline, your lungs will
be in better condition for your surgery, the speed of your healing
will increase. More oxygen can get into your body, and incisions
will heal better if your body has been smoke-free for a period of
time.
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the
night before surgery unless your doctor or nurse tells you to.
This includes gum and hard candy.
- Do not smoke, chew tobacco, or dip snuff before surgery. Doing
so may delay or cancel your surgery.
- Do not take medicines or insulin unless you are told to do so.
- You will be asked to sign a Consent for Surgery form. This
gives your doctor permission to perform surgery.
- Most patients will be given a laxative before surgery.
